Reflections from Paris.

Sally Gabori’s daughter, Amanda Jane Gabori Dibirdibi, and two of her great-granddaughters, Narelle Gabori and Tori Juwarnda Wilson Gabori have travelled to Paris for the opening of Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris, France, to celebrate this significant exhibition and honour their mother and great-grandmothers legacy.  Joined by Beverly Knight and Alcaston Gallery staff, Adriana Del Medico and Kaitlyn Gibson, the past week has been filled many special events paying tribute to Sally Gabori’s legacy as one of Australia’s greatest artists.

Following the official opening of the exhibition on Sunday 3 July, the family attended a very special event on Monday evening at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain ‘Songs of Belonging with Deborah Cheetham AO, Toni Lalich & Chineke! Chamber Ensemble” where renowned Australian soprano and composer Deborah Cheetham AO (of the Yorta Yorta people) presented a bespoke recital of works for and as part of the Sally Gabori exhibition, with the world premiere of Dibirdibi, a homage to Sally Gabori in the Kayardilt language.

The following evening, Amanda, Tori and Narelle joined by Kayardilt linguist and anthropologist, Nicholas Evans, and Australian Indigenous Art Specialists, Bruce Johnson McLean and Judith Ryan discussed Sally Gabori’s artistic and cultural legacy, paying tribute an artist, whose work continues to fascinate for its spontaneous, luminous, and profoundly original character.

On behalf of Gabori’s family and the gallery, we congratulate and thank the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain on such an important and beautiful exhibition and program of events.

Shirley Macnamara, currently exhibiting at Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 2022 and Cairns Art Gallery

Alcaston Gallery represented artist, Shirley Macnamara is currently featured in two major exhibitions in Cairns, Queensland.

The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) returns in 2022 with its inaugural Big Sculpture Showcase featuring Queensland’s most highly regarded Indigenous artists including Shireley, with her work ‘Through the Gidgea and Gum Trees. Over Spinifex Ridges and Black Soil Plains’. Interwoven with horseshoes, horsehair, spinifex, ochre, steel and copper wire, Shirley’s sculpture is a ‘vessel for memory’ - carrying within it the essence of the land from which it was formed.

Shirley is also currently featured in the Cairns Art Gallery’s FACELESS: Transforming Identity exhibition with her installation ‘Mourning For Loss’. Reminiscent of a traditional women’s funeral rite, Shirley’s spinifex-based ochre mourning cap are fragile vessels formed from the earth that offer an outwards display of grief, respect and mourning for the loss of Country.

•

For those in Cairns in July 2022 we invite you to listen to Shirley speak about her practice at the CIAF Symposium: Masters of Country on 7 July 2022 8.30am – 3.30pm at the Cairns Convention Centre or at her Artist Talk for the FACELESS exhibition at the Cairns Art Gallery 8 July 2022, 11.30am - 12.30pm.

A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR BEVERLY KNIGHT

IT'S TAX TIME IN AUSTRALIA - TIME TO GIVE, TIME TO REFLECT

Covid-19 presented challenges worldwide for collectors and artists, especially generating income to live and create. I can now report that we are on track to be very pleased with our results (we call it "Year 3 of Covid"), which directly impacted our artists and secure jobs for art worker staff. In this last year in particular some of our remote community artists faced lockdowns not faced before including the closure of art centres. But all is good! Alcaston Gallery and art centre staff do go the extra mile to act for artists especially presenting online and real exhibitions to our vast worldwide collector base.

Big thank you to all from us at Alcaston Gallery

END OF FINANCIAL YEAR DONATIONS

Alcaston Gallery, Director Beverly Knight, Gallery Manager Adriana Del Medico and staff encourage our clients to support their charities with tax-deductible cash gifts as the end of this financial year looms.

Crucial support will enable those people socially isolated or simply not coping during the last few years of Covid; supporting our institutions and advocacy bodies makes a difference! Pro Bono and in-kind support of advice to organisations for many art collectors we know already exists and we say thank you.
