Adrian Jurra Tjungurrayi •Yunala Tjukurrpa
Alcaston Gallery is excited to introduce Pintupi artist Adrian Jurra Tjungurrayi in his debut solo exhibition Yunala Tjukurrpa, presented at the Alcaston Gallery Exhibition Space, 84 William Street Melbourne/ Naarm from 26 June - 13 July 2024.
Tjungurrayi is the son of renowned Pintupi artist Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri, a respected ceremonial and community leader of the Pintupi people recognised for his meandering linear compositions depicting the desert flora and landscapes of his Country.
Since his father’s passing in 2022, Adrian Jurra Tjungurrayi has taken over custodianship of the sites and Tjukurrpa (Dreaming stories) of his father's Country, which he paints today.
In customary fashion, Tjapaltjarri took on the signature style of his father, painting large-scale works featuring rippling linework and tessellating forms. He has since made this style uniquely his own, with a softer pastel-based palette and creating depth and movement through subtle tonal shifts. Tjungurrayi’s recent compositions in milky cream and off-whites vividly conjure the shimmering salt lakes that characterise his Country.
