Warlayirti: The Art of Balgo | Survey Exhibition at RMIT Gallery
Warlayirti: The Art of Balgo is an extensive survey exhibition of art from Balgo in Western Australia, featuring diverse artworks that explore the historical and cross-cultural ties of the region, signalling the beginnings of one of the most important movements in Australian Indigenous art.
Anthony and Beverly Knight were honoured to loan key paintings for this exhibition, which they acquired from the first ever Balgo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 1986 Art from the Great Sandy Desert. Alcaston Gallery would like to thank our clients who also generously loaned and gave support to this exhibition. This landmark exhibition resulted in the recognition of a distinctive style of art unique to Balgo, and subsequently led to an art centre being established for this region.
Alcaston Gallery has represented and supported Warlayirti Artists since its inception in 1989, exhibiting some of the most prominent and major artists to emerge into contemporary Australian Indigenous art, including Eubena Nampitjin, Lucy Yukenbarri, Helicopter Tjungarrayi and their daughter Christine Yukenbarri.
Warlayirti: The Art of Balgo is curated by Dr Jacqueline Healy, Curator of the Medical History Museum, University of Melbourne, who has been an avid supporter of Balgo art, visiting the area annually for over a decade. The exhibition was launched on Monday 15th September at RMIT Melbourne, opened by Tony Ellwood, Director, National Gallery of Victoria. The exhibition will then travel to Araluen Art Centre, Northern Territory.
