MIRDIDINGKINGATHI JUWARNDA (SALLY GABORI) BRISBANE AIRPORT INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL UPGRADE

On the 19th August 2015 Brisbane Airport Corporation Pty Ltd officially launched the Brisbane Airport International Arrival Terminal upgrade featuring the reproduced paintings of recently deceased, significant artist Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori. The upgrade was unveiled by Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Curtis Pitt and was attended by the family of Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori and Alcaston Gallery Director Beverly Knight.     This major transformation of the International Arrival Terminal features over 700 metres of Mrs Gabori’s artworks digitally rendered and reproduced in large scale along the public concourse. The imagery of Mrs Gabori perfectly evokes the essence of Queensland and will be a wonderful welcome to local and international visitors. Selected paintings have been introduced into the architectural drawings and reproduced along the length of the arrival terminal, depicting the artist’s stories of the tropical seascape, salt pans, mangrove swamps and reefs on Bentinck Island, Queensland in lush and vibrant colours. This project is an immense honour and tribute to the artist whose artworks have been collected by leading galleries and collectors nationally and internationally and whose immeasurable cultural legacy will continue to live on after her passing.     Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori (b.c.1924 to 11 February 2015) was a respected traditional Kaiadilt elder who is remembered as one of the most significant contemporary Indigenous Artists of the past decade. Gabori began painting in her late seventies in 2005. Her interpretation of her Bentinck island home in Queensland Gulf, infused with the full spectrum of colour, took the contemporary art world by surprise. Colour and canvas became the catalyst for the creation of an entirely unique visual language for the artist; a way to explore life, landscape and memory. Following this momentous project at Brisbane International Airport, in 2016 Queensland Art Gallery/ Gallery of Modern Art will host a major retrospective exhibition of Mrs Gabori’s paintings.
