TIGER YALTANGKI: Rock n Roll

27-Jun-2018 - 14-Jul-2018
AK21194_email.jpg

It is with great excitement that we present new paintings by TIGER YALTANGKI in his first solo exhibition at Alcaston Gallery, Rock n Roll. These bold, vibrant artworks offer a compelling blend of traditional and contemporary cultural influences revealed through an innate understanding of colour and composition.

Tiger Yaltangki’s striking and humorous paintings reflect a deep enthusiasm for popular culture, as he references influential ‘rock n roll’ bands such as AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Credence Clearwater Revival, together with imaginative depictions of Pitjantjatjara Mamu (supernatural spirits) that allude to an inherited knowledge of his country in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunyjatjara (APY) Lands, north-west of South Australia.

In 2017 Tiger Yaltangki featured in major exhibitions including The National: New Australian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and TARNANTHI Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia. This year Tiger Yaltangki was named a finalist in the prestigious 35th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards and he is currently a finalist in the Paul Guest Drawing Prize.
