KATRINA BARBER - ILLUMINE
Alcaston Gallery is very pleased to present Illumine, an exhibition of light constructions by Western Australian new media artist Katrina Barber.
The art of Katrina Barber illuminates, not only for the viewer, but in a most direct and intimate way the artist herself. Barber’s practice is directly informed by her experience as a Deaf artist, her artwork opening pathways for communication. Initially discovering her affinity for visual art 9 years ago through a local art group, she was recognised for her artistic talent in the HERE&NOW13 project in conjunction with Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, University of Western Australia. Barber has gone on to artist residencies, including one at Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, and exhibitions throughout West Australia and Melbourne.
“She has embraced the potential of painting and visual art to connect with others and to channel everything that she sees and touches. She is prolific, rigorous, constantly researching, and incredibly informed. Her influences are moving into the phenomenological light artists such as James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson.” – Leigh Robb, Former Curator PICA, Perth and recently appointed Curator of Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of South Australia
Alcaston Gallery first exhibited Katrina Barber's work in 2014 in the group exhibition From the Outside . Deeply impressed and moved by Barber’s art practice, which traverses the personal and innate to process driven theoretical creations of back lit ink on Perspex wall mounted shadow boxes and a floor light-box for Illumine, Alcaston Gallery is honoured to be hosting Katrina Barber’s first solo exhibition in Melbourne.
This exhibition has been supported by the Western Australian Department of Culture and the Arts.
