TANIA MAJOR •ECHOES OF COUNTRY: STORIES FROM KOWANYAMA
Alcaston Gallery is delighted to present Echoes of Country - Stories from Kowanyama, the debut solo exhibition of award-winning Kokoberra artist Tania Major.
An accomplished artist, activist, and former Young Australian of the Year, Major is dedicated to preserving the rich cultural landscape and natural beauty of Kowanyama Country in Cape York, Queensland; bringing prominence to the profound connection between the Kokoberra, Yir Yoront (Kokomenjen), and Kunjen communities of Kowanyama and their land and waters though her artistic practice.
Major’s surrealist landscape paintings and papier-mâché dilly bag sculptures, rendered with an earthenware tactility, evoke the cultural nuances and sub-tropical radiance of her Country, rendered in sunset neon hues and soft ochres. Her hyper-contemporary visual language is imbued with ancestral knowledge of the seasonal changes and rituals of Kowanyama and interwoven with personal narratives. Through this dynamic interplay of modernity and tradition, Major honours the enduring resonance of the oral histories and knowledge of the people of Kowanyama Country, their echo reverberating through her contemporary art practice and into the future.
Following her accolades at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair including the Innovation Award in 2022 and the 3D Design, Sculpture & Installation Award in 2024, we are proud to showcase the first solo exhibition of Major’s career. We invite you to experience the depth and significance of Echoes of Country - Stories from Kowanyama at the Alcaston Gallery Exhibition Space, 84 William Street, Melbourne from 13 November - 6 December 2024.
