BARKLY ARTISTS | Aileen Napaljarri Long • Ada Pula Beasley • Jessie Kemarr Peterson • Rita Kemarr Beasley
Alcaston Gallery introduces four artists from the Barkly Region in the Northern Territory, Aileen Napaljarri Long, Ada Pula Beasley, Jessie Kemarr Peterson and Rita Kemarr Beasley, whose entirely distinctive yet complementary paintings of Country epitomise the broad visual language typical of the Barkly Region.
Aileen Napaljarri Long’s abstract modernist paintings with her vibrant textual colour blocking exemplify Warlpiri colourist tradition. Highly contemporary, Long’s paintings depict the wanakiji (bush tomato) that grows in abundance across the Barkly region. A finalist in this years National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards presented by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT), Long is garnering wide admiration for her natural fluency with colour.
In contrast, Ada Pula Beasley’s impressionist landscapes of Alyawarr Country are rendered in brief hazy strokes that coalesce to form trees, shrubs and flowers in a palette that draws from the local flowers of the region. Her evocative paintings capture the desert in bloom, with dunes of red earth blanketed by wildflowers.
Jessie Kemarr Peterson’s delicately rendered paintings are rhythmic and shimmering depictions of Wutunugurra (Epenarra), a place nestled in the foothills of Iytwelepenty (the Davenport Ranges). Her highly intuitive practice is driven by the broader concept of the everywhen, encompassing the past, present and future within a single moment.
Equally intuitive yet entirely distinct in artistic style, Rita Kemarr Beasley’s depictions of Wutunugurra (Epenarra) are bold and expressive. Her minimalist, graphic landscapes depict the pearlescent trunks of bloodwood trees standing stark against richly coloured backgrounds in a palette inspired by the landscapes of Iytwelepenty (the Davenport Ranges)
Aileen Napaljarri Long, Ada Pula Beasley, Jessie Kemarr Peterson and Rita Kemarr Beasley’s debut exhibition at Alcaston Gallery will be exhibited at the Alcaston Gallery Exhibition Space, 84 William Street Melbourne from 16 October – 8 November 2024.
