Ms D Yunupiŋu (1949-2026): A Tribute
Alcaston Gallery and Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Art Centre, Northern Territory, honour the late Ms D Yunupiŋu (1949-2026), with a presentation of paintings on bark and paper at Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne.
Ms D Yunupiŋu was a highly respected Yolŋu elder and distinguished contemporary artist based in Yirrkala, Northern Territory. Her many accolades, including winning the coveted Wynne Prize, affirmed her as one of the most significant artists of her generation. Through her powerful paintings, she carries forward the ancestral story of the Djulpan for generations to come.
The Djulpan story tells of the seven celestial sisters of the Pleiades constellation who, in Yolŋu poetic law, traverse a sky strewn with stars and misty rain. This ancestral story resonates deeply with the artist’s own life as one of the seven Yunupiŋu sisters, each an esteemed painter, who became known collectively as the ‘Seven Sisters’.
