Represented by Alcaston Gallery, northwest Queensland artist Shirley Macnamara is currently presenting work at the Cairns Art Gallery in 'FACELESS Transforming Identity: Blak/Black Artists from North Australia, Africa and the African Diaspora' a group exhibition currently presented at the Cairns Art Gallery that challenges established notions of identity and explores ways in which interpretations of identity can be manipulated or redefined by blak/black artists through a revisioning of the face using devices such as embellishment, erasure, and disguise.
Shirley Macnamara created a specially commissioned work for 'FACELESS Transforming Identity' entitled 'Mourning For Loss'; an installation of ten spinifex-based ochre mourning caps.
'Mourning For Loss' honours the traditional women's mourning rite whereby white clay or burnt gypsum is applied to one's head forming a heavy cap. Forged from the ochre and spinifex of Macnamara's Country, 'Mourning For Loss' extends this sense of mourning to a loss of Country - rendering visible the collective grief brought about by the violence of colonisation and its impact on the environment and one's connection to Country. What Macnamara describes as the ‘loss of loved ones, including our loved Country’.
Mourning For Loss will be on exhibition at the Cairns Art Gallery as part of 'FACELESS Transforming Identity: Blak/Black Artists from North Australia, Africa and the African Diaspora' from 25 June - 2 October 2022.

Alcaston Gallery is honoured to present Ganydjarr – Energy, a solo exhibition of new work by highly esteemed Yolngu senior artist and Maḏarrpa elder, Nonggirrnga Marawili, regarded as one of the most important and revered contemporary Australian artists working today.
Ganydjarr – Energy is a testament to Nonggirrnga Marawili’s incredible energy and drive to create art, and an unrelenting desire to paint. Her unique interpretations of the land and sea, as well as stories from her culture, come to life as she utilises natural materials from the earth such as natural ochres and pigments combined with a striking use of pink ink from recycled print toner cartridges, aligning with the Maḏarrpa philosophy ‘if you paint the land you should use the land’. The result is an explosion of bold, ethereal and highly sophisticated contemporary artworks, which consistently allude to her strong cultural and familial ties, whilst simultaneously revealing her own visceral experience and knowledge of the land and stories of north-east Arnhem Land. On exhibition at the Alcaston Gallery Exhibition Space from 10 August Marawili's exhibition will extend until 26 August 2022.

Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori • Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain Paris, France
A landmark international exhibition presenting a major solo survey of paintings by the late Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori will be on show at the distinguished Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris, France from 3 July - 6 November 2022.
The major exhibition and catalogue, which will be published in both English and French, will boast a comprehensive overview of the amazing history of the Kaiadilt people and one of Australia’s greatest artists - Sally Gabori.
Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain have worked closely with Alcaston Gallery and The Estate of Sally Gabori to bring this highly significant exhibition to life and we will continue to share details and announcements over the coming months!
