Kumanytjayi (Eileen) Napaltjarri (1956–2024) was a highly respected senior Pintupi woman and one of the most important second-generation artists of the Western Desert art movement.

As the daughter of renowned artists Charlie Tararu Tjungurrayi (c.1925–1999) and Tatali Nangala (c.1925–1999), who were both instrumental to the Pintupi men's and women's art movements in the late twentieth century, and the wife of the significant artist and former Papunya Tula Artists chairperson Kenny Williams Tjampitjinpa (c.1950–2020), Kumanytjayi (Eileen) Napaltjarri's life was deeply intertwined with the Western Desert art movement.

Kumanytjayi (Eileen) Napaltjarri's own artistic career was influenced by those of her parents and husband, however, it was her parents' cultural knowledge of Country that underpinned her practice. Throughout her career, Kumanytjayi (Eileen) Napaltjarri perfected a bold, linear geometry to depict her father’s birthplace, Tjiturrulnga. Her refined minimalism and richly toned palette affirmed her as one of the most significant women painters of the second wave of the Western Desert movement, with her works seeming to reverberate across the canvas.

Kumanytjayi (Eileen) Napaltjarri passed away in 2024, leaving behind a profound artistic and cultural legacy. In recognition of her contributions to the Western Desert art movement and Australian contemporary art, Alcaston Gallery is proud to present these significant paintings, in collaboration with the artist’s estate.
