Aboriginal Art & Culture: an American eye

  Araluen Arts Centre. Alice Springs
  Araluen Arts Centre is the focal point of Alice Springs’ performing and visual arts scene, incorporating galleries and a theatre.

Galleries
The galleries feature a program of exhibitions with a focus on Aboriginal art from Central Australia, and contemporary art by local and Australian artists.

The Albert Namatjira Gallery displays a rotating selection of paintings by this famous Aboriginal artist, his descendants and contemporaries. The gallery also features early works from Papunya and the “Hermannsburg School”.

Araluen Arts Centre was designed and built around the 300 year old Corkwood Tree in the Sculpture Garden. This tree, another at the front of the building and Big Sister Hill are also considered sacred by the Arrernte people.

  Alcaston Gallery participated in the Melbourne Art Fair since 1990.

Melbourne Art Fair is the leading art fair and public exposition in the Asia Pacific region and one of Australia's most significant exhibitions of contemporary visual art.

Established in 1988, the Melbourne Art Fair is held biennially at the historic Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne.

Melbourne Art Fair 2010 will be held from 4 - 8 August.

Melbourne Art Fair 2010 will be the most dynamic event to date, featuring over 80 national and international galleries from all states and territories of Australia, and from Auckland, Wellington, Beijing, Dublin, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Lucerne, New Delhi, Osaka and Seoul.

The Melbourne Art Fair program features the celebrated opening night Vernissage, national and international Collector Programs, Curator Programs, Public Lecture, Forums Program, Arts Publications, Private Lounge and Guided Tours.

  National Gallery of Victoria
  The NGV recently divided its collection into Australian art and international art, both to be housed separately. The international collection is located at the newly refurbished site of the original NGV (opened 1968) at St Kilda Road Melbourne. The Australian art collection is now located at Federation Square, where the entire ground floor is devoted to displaying their large Indigenous art collection. Federation Square is on the corner of Flinders & Swanston Streets, on the banks of the Yarra River and is a short walk from the NGV’s international collection.

  Newcastle Region Art Gallery
  Newcastle Region Art Gallery, Australia’s first purpose built regional gallery, was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the current gallery building on Friday 11 March 1977. Applauded as a model for medium sized galleries with its innovative floor plan and hanging system, even in its infancy critics lamented the lack of storage space. The building is also an important example of early 1970s architecture with its geometric forms and brutalist aesthetic.

  Shepparton Art Gallery
  The Shepparton Art Gallery is located across two floors of exhibition space in the Eastbank Centre, 70 Welsford Street, Shepparton.

The Shepparton Art Gallery is located across two floors of exhibition space in the Eastbank Centre, 70 Welsford Street, Shepparton.

On the ground floor the gallery has three dedicated temporary exhibition spaces thus allowing the presentation of a program of exhibitions that derive from the communities and artists of Greater Shepparton and national and international touring exhibitions. On the upper floor the gallery presents its permanent exhibition of Australian ceramics, which includes work from the first commercial potteries, the development of studio pottery, and showcases contemporary ceramic design and sculpture. Paintings and works on paper from the permanent collection are also on display.

A significant aspect of the gallery's program is the biennale Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award and the national Indigenous Ceramic Art Award.

  The Art Gallery of New South Wales
  The AGNSW recently opened their new, architecturally stunning Asian Galleries wing, which sits on top of the original building (built 1896-1909) overlooking Sydney Harbour. The lower ground floor of the AGNSW is devoted to ‘Yiribana', a gallery space dedicated to exhibiting their expanding Indigenous Art collection and which has regular changing exhibitions.

  The Art Gallery of the Northern Territory
  Situated in Darwin in the Northern Territory, this Museum and Gallery has vast holdings of early and contemporary Indigenous Art. Every year they hold the major art award to Indigenous artists, the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award.

  The Art Gallery of Western Australia
  This institution has a small but valuable holding of Indigenous art with special consideration for artists from WA. They often have to rely on generous benefactors for acquisition and loans for exhibitions.

  The Queensland Art Gallery
  This institution is small but vibrant and currently undertaking major redevelopment. The management and board are extremely supportive of its Indigenous curatorial team and collect and exhibit a wide range of artists and communities.

  Wagga Wagga Art Gallery
  Situated in the heart of the city, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is an innovative public art gallery with facilities which include several large spaces for temporary exhibitions, located in the architect-designed Civic Centre, and incorporating a stand-alone gallery to exhibit the National Art Glass Collection. The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery exhibits an exciting range of touring shows and locally developed exhibitions from the Gallery's extensive collections, as well as the work of Riverina based artists.

The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is also the home of the Margaret Carnegie Print Collection, which contains over 1200 original prints by some of Australia's foremost artists. The National Art Glass Gallery houses a world class, nationally significant collection of contemporary art glass, featuring over 350 pieces. As well as displaying the National Art Glass Collection, the gallery also exhibits a number of curated exhibitions which feature well known Australian and international glass artists throughout the year.
