Barbara Mbitjana Moore 2022

02-Mar-2022 - 18-Mar-2022

Barbara Mbitjana Moore is a proud Anmatyerre woman originally from the Ti Tree (Tea Tree) community 190 kilometres north of Alice Springs in Central Australia, who is today based in Amata in the APY lands of South Australia.

Recognised for her formidable command of paint on large-scale canvases, Moore upholds the importance of keeping Country and culture strong, and passing on cultural practice and knowledge to younger generations.

In Moore's upcoming solo exhibition her bold designs and intense colour represent variations in the landscape, depicting a bird’s eye perspective of her beloved Anmatyerre country and memories of place.

Shirley Macnamara 2022

30-Mar-2022 - 22-Apr-2021

In 2022, Alcaston Gallery is thrilled to present a collection of guutu sculptures by the highly celebrated artist, Shirley Macnamara.

Macnamara spinifex grass sculptures are an expression of the western Queensland country where the artist lives and works; created using the natural materials Macnamara encounters while she is out mustering throughout Spinifex Country, a region named for the hardy, stringy grass that covers its rich soil

Macnamara's sculptures often take the form of vessels – specifically guutu, a traditional word meaning a vessel that can carry things. These contemporary works not only reflect the artist's rich life experiences on Country but also honour cultural resonances from the past, symbolically carrying the traditions of her mother and ancestors before her.

Macnamara’s time-consuming, considered and process-based practice reveals sophisticated multi-layered meanings that draw upon issues of environment, history, politics, culture, family, and deeply personal emotions.

An artist of great insight, Shirley Macnamara guutu are poetic objects of immense beauty and poignancy.
