The ceramics and paintings created for this exhibition have emerged from my residency in Denmark in 2018.
This work is a continuation of my themes involving fragile, impermanent environments and mirrors the work I made for Pink Terraces in 2017.
I was interested in visiting South Zealand in Denmark, in particular the chalky cliffs of Mons Klint to use as a conceptual connection to the once beautiful silica landscape of the Pink Terraces in New Zealand: connecting two fragile sites, one tenuously existent, the other non-existent, at opposite ends of the Earth.
The ceramic forms aim to make an ethereal connection between land and sky. Using iridescent pigments on the surface I try to convey the delicate and intangible aspects of a landscape.
Mons Klint is and has been a very popular subject for painters. I thought it apt to make my own gesture through painting – to strip away form – to convey the disappearing nature of Nature.
