Speakers contextualised the life and work of Johnny Warangkula Tjupurrula, each bringing a different insight and experience.
John Kean spoke about his time with the artist whilst working as Arts Advisor at Papunya from 1977 - 1979. He offered personal accounts of his relationship with the late artist and described Johnny's power and authority as a senior figure within the community.
Sara Twigg-Patterson spoke of her experience establishing Papunya Tjupi Arts as the first 'real' art centre at Papunya, and of her current position as Manager of the centre. Betty Brown, one of Johnny's granddaughers, talked of her relationship with her grandfather and the famiily as a whole.
It was a pleasure to have together a group of people so instrumental in the life of the late artist. The evening was a great success for all in attendance.
The exhibition will now travel to Alcaston Gallery @ Depot Gallery, 2 Danks Street, Waterloo, Sydney, from 29 April - 10 May 2008. |
