Sally Gabori topped the high calibre of finalists, taking out the $50,000 cash prize for her painting Dibirdibi Country 2011 (pictured).

“This is a defining moment in Sally Gabori’s career, acknowledging her as a contemporary Australian artist at the top of her game” said Beverly Knight, Director of Alcaston Gallery. “Sally Gabori is a true visionary, creating exciting contemporary art whist its motivation is steeped in her Kaiadilt heritage. Alcaston Gallery is proud to represent Sally Gabori, and she is honoured and delighted to be exhibited alongside the other Gold Award finalists”.
“On behalf of Sally Gabori I thank Tracy Cooper-Lavery, Director of Rockhampton Art Gallery, and Julie Ewington, Curatorial Manager of Australian Art, Queensland Art Gallery and judge of The Gold Award 2012, for their efforts in this significant award and exhibition. Sally would also like to thank her family, friends and support base at Mornington Island Art, including Manager Brett Evans, as without their assistance she would not be able to enjoy her art practice”.

The Gold Award honours the memory of Moya Gold, philanthropist and educator, who inspired and provided for this prize directly through a substantial bequest to Rockhampton Art Gallery, for the acquisition of Australian paintings. The invitation only award considered the very best of contemporary Australian painting when selecting the finalists, all of whom have been recent recipients of major Australian art awards or included in major exhibitions.

Sally Gabori is one of twenty artists currently exhibiting in unDisclosed: 2nd National Indigenous Art Triennial at National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Alcaston Gallery will be exhibiting new work by Sally Gabori at Melbourne Art Fair from 1 – 5 August 2012
