Mornington and Bentinck Islands are situated in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. In the 1940s severe drought and tidal waves affected these communities, culminating in a deterioration of the Kaiadilt homelands on Bentinck Island and the transportation of the entire population to Mornington Island. In the 1980s the Kaiadilt people began to re-establish their ancestral lands on Bentinck Island, but Mornington Island is still the major resource centre for these people today.
If you would like to arrange a time to view works by artists from Bentinck Island, please contact Jess Booth at the gallery on (03) 9418 6444 or at art@alcastongallery.com.au.
